Have you ever spent time in the charming town of Anacortes? Known as the gateway to the San Juan Islands, this tiny island village can stand out in terms of attractions, amenities, and natural beauty. But the most interesting part of downtown Anacortes is certainly a collection of murals – over 150 of them, in fact – that a beloved local artist has left as a legacy.
In these uncertain times, keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your list of destinations to visit at a later date.
The city itself comprises 15.4 square miles and has approximately 17,000 residents.

Walking around downtown Anacortes is a delightful experience in any season. It is also full of restaurants and cafes, inviting boutiques and galleries.

It is all the work of the late Bill Mitchell, artist, historian and staunch defender of Anacortes and his quirks.

Instead, he did his life’s work filling Anacortes with life-size murals of famous people in the city.

The murals feature residents of Anacortes from all walks of life and professions.

Simply pick up a wall map at the Anacortes Visitor Center on Commercial Avenue and 9th Street.

Next time you go pay homage to Bill Mitchell and see how many murals you can find.
