The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center presents ‘Pilobolus: The Big Five-Oh!’ February 26

Celebrate 50 years of boundary-pushing classics in this remixed retrospective
The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) hosts Pilobolus: The Big Five-OH! Saturday, February 26, 2022, 8 p.m. A dynamic presentation celebrating Pilobolus’ iconic works, from vintage classics to their Emmy-winning work Shadowland, this 50th anniversary show transforms Pilobolus traditions and brings its past into the future.
Over the past 50 years, the Pilobolus Dance Company has performed around the world at events ranging from the Oscars to the Olympics and has collaborated with some of the world’s biggest influencers and creators. Fresh, vibrant, and all-new for 2022, the remarkable company that carved out an iconic place for itself in American culture in the early 1970s still wows audiences with an irresistible blend of wit, sensuality, and startling physical acumen.
“Whether you’re new to the Pilobolus phenomenon or a decades-old fan, we anticipate Pilobolus: The Big Five-OH! will be a wonderful celebration of their best work,” said Eric Fliss, general manager of the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.
“For 50 years, Pilobolus has captivated audiences from Broadway to Berlin, with appearances on Oprah and Late Night – and now it’s our turn to proudly host this breathtaking show in Miami.”
Beginning as an experimental troupe of Dartmouth College students in 1971, Pilobolus tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and power of connected bodies. They succeed by blending inventiveness and humor, intertwining their bodies in striking positions through weight-sharing techniques.
“Exploring gender, sexuality and the many meanings of movement, Pilobolus dancers are some of the strongest and most versatile in the business,” added Fliss.
This performance is funded in part by a grant from the South Arts Dance Touring Initiative in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the State of Florida, and in part by Culture Shock Miami.
Pilobolus: The Big Five-OH! is recommended for ages 13 and up. All patrons entering the theater require a ticket, regardless of age. Food and drinks from outside are not allowed in the room. Strollers are not allowed inside the auditorium. Senior and military discounts are available in person only.
