The Lighthouse Performing Arts Center shines on campus

Westminster Christian School has unveiled its brand new performing arts centre, The Lighthouse, ahead of schedule in fall 2020. Despite the pandemic, the Fine Arts department has managed to safely hold limited events at the during the inaugural year.

The Lighthouse has a state-of-the-art auditorium that seats nearly 650 people and provides a top-notch performance environment for Westminster’s highly regarded and award-winning fine arts programme. It also offers classroom space, a two-story lobby for displaying student artwork, and practice and performance spaces for orchestra, band, choir, theater, dance, and more. This magnificent building was made possible by generous donations from families of the schools, alumni, teachers and staff and friends of the Westminster community.

“This is a first-class, world-class installation recognized by all who walk through the door,” said Donna Underwood, Westminster’s Director of Fine Arts. “We are so blessed that we can showcase the incredible God-given talents of our students in a place like this.”

The Fine Arts program at Westminster Christian School receives wide support as it is known for nurturing and developing creative and artistic expression that complements students’ critical thinking and academic skills. Westminster students have the opportunity to explore the arts through the following disciplines: orchestral, choir, dance, theatre, film, orchestra and visual arts, which include drawing and painting, photography, architectural design and sculpture . The fine arts program is offered to students in preschool through 12th grade, with focused instruction beginning in fourth grade.

In addition to the lighthouse, the Lewis Fraser Art Building offers spacious studios where middle and high school students studying the visual arts have all the tools they need under one roof to hone their two- and three-dimensional artistic skills. The elementary school has its own art studio and music room where students learn and grow in the arts.

Westminster fine arts groups regularly win top honors in competition and travel each year to perform and/or enhance their arts education in national and international venues.
