Spiva Art Gallery exhibition to explore “A Solitary Year” – Newstalk KZRG

Joplin, MO – Artist and educator Sharon Harper will present “A Solitary Year,” a solo exhibition opening Wednesday, May 18 at the Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University.

An artist talk will be offered at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 16 in the auditorium of Webster Hall, followed by a reception at the gallery.

Harper, who hails from Springfield, Missouri, has rooted his work as a visual artist in personal storytelling – always involving the immediate issues of life, both internal and external. Death, pandemic loneliness, family relationships and aging are among the themes explored in “A Lonely Year.”

Her works use a variety of mediums including different types of paper, graphite, ink, colored pencil and fabrics.

She is Emeritus Professor of Art and Design at Missouri State University and her work has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions. She has received numerous awards as well as artist residencies, including with the Truro Center for the Arts, Ucross Foundation, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and Prairie Center for the Arts.

Spiva Art Gallery’s summer hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Admission is free and open to the public.
