Some First Friday of September Art Exhibits in Red Deer address important themes
Red Deer art galleries with opening receptions on the first Friday in September show everything from videotaped experiences of racism to artistic ruminations on motherhood.
Explore deep human connections and the effects of discrimination through a powerful storytelling exhibit I See You: Sawubona, presented at the Viewpoint Gallery in the City of Red Deer Cultural Services Building, 5205-48th Ave. These video stories, which will run until October 28, feature people who have experienced prejudice and racism. Their stories aim to increase empathy. First Friday reception is 6-8pm
The Alberta Spirit Show, presented by members of the Alberta Community Arts Clubs Association, is on display at the Kiwanis Gallery at the Downtown Red Deer Public Library until October 16. across the province in the youth to advanced categories. The First Friday Reception, hosted by the Red Deer Arts Council, runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A one-night-only exhibition of paintings by Paula Sommers and Taryn Rathgeber is on display Friday at the Artribute School of Art in the Old Courthouse in Red Deer. A reception on the first Friday will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Sweet Tooth and Baby Teeth is a featured exhibition by EM Alysse Bowd, whose motherhood-themed watercolors are featured, along with acrylic paintings by Carol Lynn Gilchrist, at the Riverlands Studio Gallery, 5123-48th St. at 30 september. The reception on the first Friday will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Brush with Desire, an exhibition of paintings by Philip Gauthier, is highlighted at A-Plus Art Gallery and Unique Collections, Unit 203-4919-49th St through September 30. An opening reception will be held on the first Friday from noon to 4:30 p.m.
In a Class of His Own is an exhibition of works by former Red Deer Polytechnic visual arts professor Jim Westergard at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery from September 3 through November 19. The Boultbee Project, by Paul Boultbee, can be seen on First Friday in Red Deer.
Brad Olstad’s multimedia art is on display at Curiosity Art and Framing, Bay 4, 4676-61st St. through October. The gallery is open until 7 p.m. on the first Friday.
Connections is a juried exhibit on display in a new gallery at the YMCA Northside Community Center, 6391-76 St. through September 30.
Six local artists showcase their diverse works in a pop-up gallery in the Red Deer Arts Council’s new digs at Unit 6, 4919-49th St. in downtown Red Deer. This multimedia show for Alberta Culture Days 2022 runs until September 30.
Alberta Skies, works by artist Osi Cruz-Lahtinen, are on display at the Marjorie Wood Gallery at the Kerry Wood Nature Center in September.
Sally Peddle’s photographs of old Alberta farmhouses, slowly eroded by the elements, are on display with cardboard models through Nov. 3 at the Corridor Community Gallery on the ground floor of the Red Deer Recreation Center.
Martin Dahl’s drawings and watercolors are on display at the Velvet Olive Lounge.
