The Art Gallery of the South at Ohio University will feature an exhibition of mixed media art by Zachary D. Jones, beginning today.
The Southeast Ohio native pours his real-life experience into his work, which represents both the natural and holistic need to escape, as well as the many layers of human experience.
“Learning from nature and exploring personal feelings within nature are inspiring,” Jones said. “I empty my mind, I open the space to creation and engagement with nature. This allows me to find and gather materials for my pieces.
Jones works outdoors in the Appalachian foothills, creating art in nature. He is guided by the local climate and natural biome of his residence in Athens, sourcing charcoal from his home and mixing naturally occurring pigment paint with stream water.
“I use all-natural material to create charcoal for my paintings. It allows me to keep nature moving throughout the creative process and ultimately the finished work,” Jones said. he beauty of being outside is that freedom does not allow work to become artificial. The humidity of summer, the coolness of fall, the rejuvenation of spring are all found in art.
This exhibit will feature a collection of mixed media art on display at the Dingus Technology Center located on the OUS campus.
Some of Jones’ previous works have been exhibited at the Zanesville Museum of Art, Marcia Evans Gallery, Dairy Barn Cultural Art Center, and Baker Center Show Multicultural Art Gallery.
There will be a closing reception at 5 p.m. on November 17.
The exhibition runs until Tuesday, November 22.
The Ohio University Southern Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
