Opening night brings the community together at the South Asian art gallery and CBC pop-up newsroom

CBC Manitoba has emerged in Garden City, one of Winnipeg’s most diverse and fastest growing neighborhoods.
The temporary location of the Garden City Mall is the result of a collaboration between the local South Asian community and CBC Manitoba.
The ephemeral gallery and office officially opened on October 15 with a small opening night.
Local filmmaker Mandeep Sodhi (Creative films Sodhi) produced a short video of the space and its transformation from an empty retail space into a functional newsroom and art gallery. The video culminates in the opening night celebrations.
Sodhi also produces several video profiles of the featured artists with work in the pop-up. These artist profiles will be published in the coming weeks.
The pop-up is free and open to the public until November 6. The project saw the light of day after months of planning and with contributions from over two dozen members of the local South Asian community.
In virtual meetings over the fall, a community committee, working with CBC, developed a strategy to showcase the art and culture of Manitoba’s diverse South Asian community.
A handful of renowned local artists exhibit works in the space. (For a full list of artists, click here.) A wall of artwork from schoolchildren is also on display. Events, demonstrations and discussions are scheduled throughout the month.
