Noongar Country Art Exhibition 2022 returns to Bunbury Regional Art Gallery
Aboriginal artists living and working on Noongar Boodja should once again be celebrated as one of the South West’s most popular exhibitions returns to the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery.
This year, Noongar Country – an annual exhibition showcasing works by established and emerging indigenous artists living in the region – will open on Friday and will be centered around the theme Kaarla Koort-ak: Woonya, Moort, Boodja – Hearts on Fire: Love , Family, Country .
BRAG said it invited artists to explore themes around bringing people together, and the exhibition would offer them the opportunity to expand their practice and exhibit their works for sale.
Director Mike Bianco said it was a great pleasure to welcome the community, artists and curators to BRAG.
“Noongar Country as an Exhibition has been celebrating First Nations artists from the region for over 20 years and we are grateful for the community’s continued participation in this annual event,” he said.
“We are also grateful to all the artists participating in the exhibition, and to the vision and courage of this year’s curatorial team of Amanda Bell, Karen Morgan and Katelyn Whitehurst.
“For the community, the artists and the curators, it is a great honor for BRAG to welcome you all.”
BRAG said it aims to promote high-quality Indigenous art to contemporary audiences, with several awards for notable pieces.
Alcoa sponsored the exhibit’s main prize, with the town of Bunbury providing a major prize of $8,000 for the most impressive artwork.
A $2,000 Emerging Artist Award sponsored by the South West Development Commission and a $1,500 Viewer’s Choice Award from Umbrella Realty will also be presented.
The awards were to be announced at an opening event at BRAG on Friday, May 27 from 6 p.m., with the community invited to share a night of “songs, stories, food and wine” to celebrate this year’s artists. .
Noongar Country 2022 will run from Friday, May 27 to August 21, and BRAG said several more public programs are expected to be announced soon.
