New exhibition by artist Cavan at the Solas Art Gallery

Julie Corcoran’s ‘Looking for Light’ exhibition will open at Solas Gallery, Ballinamore on Friday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Based in County Cavan, Julie has developed an ethereal style of photography to communicate concepts exploring the human condition.

‘Looking for Light’ is an exhibition of works rich in symbols. Julie’s conceptual photography is based on strong female visuals that are computer processed to look more like paintings than traditional photographs.

Regarding her work, Julie said: “The issues that fascinate me the most are the treatment and perception of women in social, cultural and political contexts.

“I use strong visuals to deliver an empowering message, especially when it comes to gender and identity; defying the misogynist’s agenda, defending the power of self-confidence.

Heavily influenced by the writings of Marina Warner, this exhibit is also a reaction to the final report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Inquiry.

The exhibition will be opened by longtime friend and singer-songwriter Dara MacGabhann.

Dara is one half of the jazz duo, The Two Fives Ones, and has worked extensively in the Irish music industry.

Dara created MoPoSoGs – Monaghan Poets and Songwriters Group – ten years ago, and regularly collaborates with Julie on creative projects.

The exhibition will run until Saturday 13 November.

The Solas Art Gallery is located above the Four Seasons Garden Center on Ballinamore Main Street and is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
