Crowds gather for the opening of the Nepenthe Art Gallery at Hollin Hall
ALEXANDRIA SOUTH – Natives of Alexandria Jim and Carrie Garland open Nepenthe Gallery, 7918 Fort Hunt Road, bringing art from around the world to historic Hollin Hall Mall in the Fort Hunt section of Alexandria.
The gallery takes its name from the Greek term meaning “a place without sorrow”. According to Carrie, “Our family has cherished this term for decades.” The Garlands hope their gallery will be something of a retreat for people, as well as a gathering place for the community.
Many varieties of art will be exhibited such as oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, photographs, glass art and sculptures. Iconic prints, neon images and handicrafts will also be featured. The art gallery will feature local artists as well as artwork from other parts of the United States and around the world.
Each month a masterpiece from the owners’ family collection of 19and American art of the century will be exhibited and conferences will be offered with these pieces. Artists include Thomas Sully, Alfred Bircher, John Sloan and Edward Potthast. an oil painting, Regattas by Theodore Earl Butler, American impressionist painter, protege and son-in-law of Claude Monet is the first masterpiece presented by the Owens Foundation.
The photography studio of the local master photographer Renee C. Gage will also be inside the Nepenthe Gallery. Gage specializes in capturing families, children, pregnant women and professionals. Last January, the Professional Photographers of America awarded him a Photographic Craftsman Diploma. Gage has won numerous prestigious awards, including Virginia Professional Photographers Associate’s “Best Child Portrait” and “Ascend” was named one of the Top 50 Child Portraits in the United States.
Gage is delighted to be part of the Nepenthe Gallery. She will continue to offer her signature rental sessions, but is excited to be part of the energy of emerging and established artists. She says, “You could pick up this gallery and drop it off in DC, but the goal is to have it in our little neighborhood.”
Also in the space is a custom frame store offering a wide variety of custom frames and mirrors. And every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Nepenthe will host an ART+WINE+CHEESE event highlighting different artists, experts and genres.
