Center des Arts offers new courses starting in February | Culture & Leisure

The Hammond Regional Arts Center will be offering various courses for experienced and aspiring artists throughout Spring 2022 as part of its monthly arts programming, ARTisTRY.

Each course will take place on specific Saturdays from February to May. Classes will be held at the Art Center, located at 217 E. Thomas St. in downtown Hammond.

Interested students can plan to develop arts and crafts skills. ARTisTRY classes offer different monthly themes, allowing participants to create unique art projects under the guidance of professional art educators. Each project is hands-on and will explore the principles and elements of the art form.

“Students will have the opportunity to take home their original artwork while learning about how art can be brought into their daily lives,” said Tara Bennett, HRAC Media Coordinator.

Spring 2022 classes include ceramics on February 5 and 12. Participants will make the objects of their choice using air-dried clay while learning different clay sculpting techniques.

On March 12 and 26, students will create bayou-themed collages.

On April 23 and 30, the focus will be on handwriting techniques and their use in calligraphy.

On May 14 and 21, students will learn paper quilling.

Each lesson runs from 10 a.m. to noon.

Kids classes are open to students ages 6-12, and teen/adult classes are available for students ages 13 and up. Instructors will give lessons through verbal, visual demonstrations and examples. No prior experience is required for each class.

“We welcome beginners as well as seasoned veterans who may want to brush up on the fundamentals,” Bennett said. “We have something for everyone.”

Prices for children’s classes are $15 for HRAC members and $20 for non-members. Prices for teen/adult classes are $25 for HRAC members and $30 for non-members.

Course fees are used to fund classroom supplies and further Hammond Regional Arts Center’s educational outreach programming mission.

You can also register by phone at 985-542-7113 or in person at the Arts Center. The Hammond Regional Arts Center has regular hours of operation Wednesday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m.
