From July 2 to August 7, the Beverly Arts Center is hosting a show by members of The American Jewish Artists' Club. The theme of the show is
A Gathering of Waters: Artists engage with forms of "water" cited in Jewish text. The motif of water is an important and prominent one in Jewish culture. In the Tanach, water is one of the most explored elements from the splitting of the waters above and below to the flood to the parting of the seas, to name just a few examples. Water is also a complex element as it carries many different meanings. Water is life in that it is both creator and destroyer, claiming the ability to both give and take life. This gives it an almost heavenly quality.
Consequently, this show provides an excellent opportunity for one to explore Judaism through one of its most discussed symbols. However, the members of The American Jewish Artists Club will be tackling a variety of content, not all of which are religiously based. This causes one to realize that water is not an exclusively Jewish notion and that it has its roots in many religions and cultures. There are dozens of flood stories and instances when water acts as both life and death. Like water ties together two vastly different states of being, so does A Gathering of Waters tie together many world cultures and religion through the one concept that is understood by all.
There will be an open reception on July 11, 12:30-3pm.
