Harnessing the
power of artists and performers, this concert series that showcases
an exciting crop of performers fusing Jewish themes to contemporary
musical idioms. The resulting cultural hybrid mirrors the
oft-hyphenated identities of urban audiences, celebrates the rich
diversity of Jewish culture and bridges our heritage to other
ethnic groups and the broader cultural patchwork.
Throughout history, Jews have had a
tradition of cultural hybridity, borrowing from the myriad
neighboring cultures in which they live and in turn enriching them.
This was true throughout the Middle East, Western Europe,
Mediterranean basin, Central Asia, Europe and now the Americas.
KFAR produces the Global Groove world music series in partnership
with Hothouse, highlighting the Jewish hues in the global palette.
When in a context of the rich diversity of cultures from six
continents, the myriad Jewish musical forms, old and new, take
their rightful places in the rich musical tapestry.
Words carry
significant meaning in Jewish life. The universe was created by
utterances, as were the laws received at Sinai. For millenia, Jews
have read, debated, written and treasured words. We are, in short,
people of books. In partnership with Zeek: The journal of Jewish
Culture and Thought, KFAR is pleased to present Dvarim (Hebrew for
words)- a series of explorations of written, spoken and performed
words by artists examining the contemporary Jewish experience.
This set of
informal events salons provide a means to discuss trends, news and
developments from the Jewish arts world while allowing our audience
members build relationships with one another.
This
initiative works to establish relationships with and between local
artists, writers, musicians and performers, including those
connected to Jewish community and those seeking alternative
conduits to heritage. KFAR hosts quarterly “social salons” to
foster interaction, artistic collaboration and community among
associates. The community also provide artists with workshops and
master classes for the exploration of heritage through craft, using
group text study and discussion as a springboard to develop new
works.
Working in
conjunction with local art-house cinemas and film festivals, films.

KFAR has found
that Jewish Holidays are best marked by utilizing their themes as
springboards for exuberant cultural celebrations. Whether it’s a
Marching Band performing “I have a little Dreidl,” a DJ adding
beats behind Megilla readings or a slam poet reinterpreting the

implements synagogue-based cultural arts programs that combine
community-building and exploration of contemporary Jewish
expression. The initiative is comprised of five modules that borrow
from KFAR’s existing programs, adapting them for use in the
congregational setting. The components “stack” for an integrated
programming solution that can also be used in a stand-alone fashion
or to interface with existing initiatives. The modules engage
members on multiple levels, developing an arts affinity group
within the community that can in turn enrich congregational life.
