By day, the members of the rock band Evën Sh'Siyah are normal Orthodox Jews practicing law, seeing dental patients, praying and studying Torah. By night, those same Hebrew words become their lyrics for their complex blend of southern and middle-eastern influenced classic American rock.
Evën Sh'Siyah's original music blends folk, classic rock, Hasidic and Middle-Eastern influences. Their song lyrics may borrow from from ancient Hebrew texts, but their music is firmly rooted in the southern rock of the Allman Brothers and Lynard Skynard with a dash of The Grateful Dead.
The band has has released three CDs with a sound sometimes cleverly described as "Gefilte Phish," but inthe end they're nice Jewish guys who like to jam.
They don't drink or smoke or play poker. They do rock, but they just don't roll on Shabbes.
