It Happened in Italy (2009) tells the story of World War II Italians who helped save Jews from perishing in Hitler’s “Final Solution.” The author, Elizabeth Bettina, returns to her family’s village of Campagna in the region of Campania, to study the history of that village’s internment camp.
From there she takes the reader on a journey that spans the globe, recording the memories of Jewish holocaust survivors and the Italians who came to their aid.
Ms. Bettina will be accompanied by Ursula Korn Selig, who spent World War II in Italian hideouts that ranged from a convent to a bakery. Elizabeth Bettina is a native New Yorker who has lived in Italy.
