Event Description

The Chicago Klezmer Ensemble has performed as far away as the great hall of Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and Teatro Manzoni in Milan, Italy and as nearby as a backyard wedding around the corner. The group rarely gives a full-length concert on its own turf, though. This is your chance to hear Chicago Klezmer Ensemble’s extraordinary interpretation of Yiddish instrumental folk music in a concert setting.

Led by clarinetist Kurt Bjorling, who has also performed and recorded with Brave Old World, the Klezmetics and with violinist Itzhak Perlman, the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble manages to combine the earthy, emotional power of centuries-old Jewish music.

"the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble ... did more than avoid the usual klezmer cliches. The Saturday night concert ... argued persuasively for klezmer as an art music worthy of scholarly performance and serious listening. That's not to say, however, that the evening was in any way dour or academically dry. On the contrary, this quintet addressed dance rhythms with unmistakable verve, traditional wedding music with palpable joy..." - Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

The ensemble consists of Kurt Bjorling (clarinet), Joshua Huppert and Elisabeth Johnson (violin), Alan Ehrich (bass) and Eve Monzingo (tsimbl).
